Abstract

The Gitcoin Grants 24 (GG24) grant season is quickly approaching. We propose funding two innovative rounds this season: Bioregional Reforestation and Public Goods (PG) Tooling Development. The Bioregional Reforestation funding round is an experiment that uses tooling built by Silvi Protocol that funds bioregional funding pools that can be unlocked by local reforestation efforts using smart contract escrow accounts, EAS for MRV, AI for tree selection and Hypercerts impact certificates. The PG Tooling Development round funds open‑source public goods tooling that measurably increases interoperability, raises product maturity, resolves critical Ethereum UX pain points, and forges cross‑project collaborations and is distributed using conviction voting and retro rewards. These funding initiatives are aligned with Public Nouns’ mission to support public goods through experimentation, advocacy and funding.

How does this initiative support Public Goods?

Bioregional Reforestation: Reforestation and biodiversity are two of humanity and the planet’s most important public goods. Our existence depends on trees and the ecosystems they support. Trees are non-excludable, as we all benefit from clean air and many other benefits of healthy ecosystems. They are also non-rivalrous, as everyone on the planet can use the benefits.

PG Tooling Development: In order to effectively fund public goods, we depend on a stack that’s well-built and actively maintained which includes capital formation, capital allocation, reputation, and impact reporting. This round will identify critical infrastructure in these domains and work towards improving them and solving the greatest problems that communities and projects face when funding shared wealth.

Why does it need funding right now?

Both of these rounds will kick off in October during the GG24 season. Both rounds have already received support from a diverse set of funders. This proposal is an opportunity to allocate 5 ETH that will be matched by over $240k of funding from other sources. This funding will help the round operators lock in this additional funding from Gitcoin. By funding these initiatives now, these experiments will be able to meet their funding goals to make a huge impact. Funding reforestation is needed now more than ever as we face planetary collapse.

Impact/Deliverables

Bioregional Reforestation:

• Funding for nine bioregions globally, which will be tracked using the following metrics:
  • Trees planted
  • Trees survived
  • $ Flowed
  • Stewards onboarded
• Publish a report about the impact generated at the end of the pilot Public Nouns highlighted as a funding partner

PG Tooling Development: Funding for the round will be distributed in 2 tracks, with an additional Retro funding round distributed post-project bonus for both tracks:

• Pilot Pool: funding for new ideas / new builders working on early stage concepts
  • $1-5k funding
  • Targeting 5-10 funded proposals
• Growth Pool: funding for critical infrastructure projects
  • $5-20k funding
  • Targeting 5-10 funded proposals

Proposals will include their own impact metrics and reporting on how to measure success, which will be used to determine the retroactive funding distribution.
