Public Nouns

Summary

Social Nouns is seeking 10 ETH to boost the development of its ecosystem in various ways.

We will transfer the funds from the Social Nouns multisig to a smart contract fund that will be able to bid on Social Nouns NFTs, which will then be transferred by the contract to the Public Nouns DAO.

We’ll then create proposals from within Social Nouns for use of the funds to cover e.g. expenses and compensation for work. The contract has been more thoroughly explained here: https://prop.house/nouns/open-round:-12/2220

Our co-founder Martti Malmi is the first developer to work with Satoshi on Bitcoin in 2009-2011.

Social Nouns Mission

• Be “the Front Page of Web3 Social” by providing various analytics and features on the landing page for anyone seeking information about the space.
• Foster and facilitate the emergence of paradigm breaking decentralized social applications.
• Nurture an environment supportive of rapid, parallel safe-to-fail experimentation (the source of true radical innovation) for open-source social protocols to collaborate and integrate with each other.

How does this initiative support Public Goods?

Social Nouns itself supports specific, vetted - open-source and decentralized social media protocols such as https://www.lens.dev/ and https://iris.to/.

Thesis

Hundreds of millions in investments have been committed into capturing the web3 social landmass via monetization by tokens. On the app side, that has yet to yield any earth shattering innovations, mostly incremental web2 skeuomorphism.

Truly disruptive web3 social dapps will emerge from open networks, utilizing multiple protocols and as a result of democratically voted experiments within a collaborative ecosystem.

How is it non-excludable?

For a protocol to join Social Nouns, it currently requires a due diligence brief (main factors: open-source and fully decentralized), purchase of a Social Noun. The creation of a new head trait (often e.g. the logo of the protocol), and addition to the list of supported protocols: https://socialnouns.wtf/protocols

Why does it need funding right now?

Our team has been working out of pocket for the past six months and covering all expenses on their own. We’re seeking to extend our runway and capabilities to develop the project further in order to support the ultimate public good: the emergence of a fully decentralized social media that is controlled and owned by the user.

One where you are not the product. The protocol is. The dapps are. A social media that doesn’t cancel ideas or police thought. Where you keep your privacy, pseudonymity and even anonymity if you so wish.

A social media that is natively crypto, where profiles travel with you. Where you own everything you post. And can see the source code of the algorithms if need be. Ultimately even having a say in what gets developed, instead of that being a decision for the darkness of foundation grant committees.

All this needs to be created today, while it’s still possible.

Impact/Deliverables

Work on SocialNouns.wtf front and the underlying Nouns protocol continues. Current priorities are:

• Fully develop the smart contract fund so that Nounish DAOs can receive angel / seed investment easily while remaining a pure DAO.
• Major evolution of the current analytics page, which is currently static and user feedback has already indicated that e.g. on-chain statistics / data is required https://socialnouns.wtf/analytics.
• Continue the work toward building a decentralized alternative to Nounish DAO Discords. Because as a centralized tool, it’s currently a systemic risk for DAO communities. As having their communications channels pulled at any moment due to one corporate decision. We will be utilizing the Iris and Lens protocols in pursuing this.
