Community Vegetable nursery and seed propagation centre
Tl;dr:
We are looking for $5.5k to build a nounish local community vegetable nursery and seed propagation centre to improve food production quality for local farmers in Ol’ngarua Laikipia Kenya.
What? Laikipia county is the heart of the bread basket of Kenya with a large population of the locals being farmers by profession. The majority are poor subsistence farmers who produce just enough to live off of, with the small remainder serving as their extra source of income. Most of the farmers produce their own seedlings and propagate their own seeds through primitive methods that suppress their yields, due to the seedlings lowered quality. We are looking to build a community nursery and seed propagation centre to supply local farmers with quality seedlings to boost their yields, and in return help improve their income.
How? We are looking to build a well equipped greenhouse nursery to serve as the propagation centre. The greenhouse nursery will be equipped with sterilized seed trays, a reliable and efficient watering system, UV, air, humidity and temperature regulation and will serve as an educational centre for local farmers to learn effective ways of farming in collaboration with a local farmers association. The plan is to give free seedlings to registered farmers in the community for two seasons then proceed to sell them at a very cheap price to keep the operation sustainable.

Why? We are living in a world rapidly facing food insecurity and the majority of the people in the third world are at peril and oblivious to the impending crisis. Our goal is to help local farmers get access to high quality seedlings that are a problem of low germination rate and also exposure to pests and elements caused a lower quality to be produced .
1.) Weather resistant- With global warming causing a big shift in the weather patterns, farmers who depend on rain as their primary irrigation are at risk of losing all their hard toiled crops. Introducing them to high quality hybrid seedlings will help them have an assured food security.
2.) Pest resistant- Majority of the traditional vegetables and foods grown in the region are susceptible to pests that destroy crops or lower their quality and yields resulting in minimal income to the farmers. Introducing hybrid quality seedlings will greatly reduce the pesticides applied to the crops hence saving the local farmers money and cushioning their health by reducing ingestion of harmful chemical substances.
By taking care of these two, local farmers will have a good base to build their farming venture upon and will collectively improve the output and income of the community as whole
Lil nouns can help bring this idea to reality by funding a project that will help leverage web3 in the local farming world in the following ways
-Creation of an onchain registry for the farmers to aid in follow ups and progress reports.
-Bridging the middleman infested gap between producer and retailer/consumer for the web3 related ventures that are involved in the agro-produce world.
Timeline One and a half month from execution date to propagate seeds and to create a distribution mechanism to local farmers
Funding allocation 1 - Land preparation(clearing, tilling and leveling)
soil, hydroponics, water and nematodes analysis $700 2 - Greenhouse installation - -Building materials(steel frames and polythene sheet covers), net shading, zigzag wires, foundation work
- Greenhouse steel furniture, UV resistant mulch, irrigation apparatus, seedling trays, planting media, reliable water supply system, working tools,Training 10 farmers, $3300
3 - High quality seeds- High quality hybrid vegetable seeds sourced from reputable and registered producers within the region in bulk $1000
4 - Media and branding - merchandise for the participating farmers alongside photography and videography for proliferation $500
