Idea

Describe your project in 80 characters or less.

EcoPlay Malawi – Upcycled Playground & Creativity Hub

What is the problem or frustration you want to solve using this grant?

Children in underserved Malawian communities lack access to safe, creative, and educational play spaces, while waste materials like tires and plastics pollute the environment. This limits opportunities for early childhood development, artistic expression, and environmental awareness.

Through this project, we aim to solve: The absence of safe play areas for kids; the lack of spaces for youth creativity; environmental pollution due to uncollected waste; limited community engagement in child-cent

Why do you think it has yet to be solved? Is it merely a lack of funding or are there other barriers at play?

Many Malawian children lack safe places to play and express creativity, while waste litters their communities. This project transforms discarded materials into a vibrant playground and art hub, fostering joy, environmental awareness, and community pride, proving small acts can spark lasting change and empower future generations.

What is the best-case outcome of receiving this grant?

The grant will create a safe, inspiring playground and art hub that transforms waste into joy. It will boost children’s well-being, spark environmental awareness, and build community pride. This space will empower youth, foster creativity, and inspire similar projects across Malawi, creating lasting positive change.

If you had access to 10x the funding amount, what could you improve? How would the outcome and impact change?

With 10x funding, we would build multiple playgrounds and creativity hubs across Malawi, adding educational programs on sustainability and mental health. This would reach thousands more children, strengthen communities, and inspire a nationwide movement for upcycling, environmental care, and youth empowerment, creating far greater lasting impact.

Execution

How will you carry out the project and bring it to completion?

We will start by engaging the community and securing the site. Local artisans will build playgrounds using recycled materials, while youth artists lead workshops and murals. I’ll coordinate efforts, manage partnerships, and oversee progress. Community leaders will help mobilize volunteers to ensure lasting impact and ownership.

What is an interesting (operational) detail about the project that is non-obvious to an outsider?

An interesting detail is that many playground elements will be built using innovative upcycling techniques, like turning old tires into safe climbing structures or plastic bottles into colorful panels. This not only reduces waste but also teaches children practical skills about sustainability and resourcefulness through hands-on involvement.

What does the timeline to completion look like? Any major factors that could delay the project? Any hard deadlines you need to comply with?

The project will take 4 months: community engagement and materials collection (Month 1), construction (Month 2), art workshops and garden planting (Month 3), and launch with training (Month 4). Delays may occur due to material sourcing, weather, or volunteer availability. We aim to finish before the school term for maximum impact.

Are you already working on this project, and for how long? What have you learned?

I have been developing this idea for several months, engaging local youth and artisans in discussions about play, creativity, and waste. I’ve learned that communities are eager to create safe, inspiring spaces but lack resources and knowledge about upcycling. This project taps into their enthusiasm and fills that gap with practical support.

About you

Why are you uniquely qualified to make use of this grant?

I’m deeply connected to Malawian communities with experience leading grassroots projects focused on youth, environment, and creativity. My skills in coordination, advocacy, and community engagement position me to effectively manage this project, ensuring it meets local needs and creates lasting positive impact using the grant.

How did you come up with the project idea? Do you have domain expertise in this area?

The idea came from witnessing a lack of safe play areas and rising waste in Malawian communities. With experience in community engagement, environmental advocacy, and youth empowerment, I saw an opportunity to combine upcycling and creative play to address these issues turning challenges into inspiring, practical solutions for kids and families.

Please tell us in one or two sentences about something you achieved in the past that would be indicative of your ability to execute this project.

I successfully led a community-driven eco-e-waste recycling campaign that transformed discarded materials into useful tools and art, engaging youth and local artisans. This experience demonstrated my ability to mobilize resources, build partnerships, and deliver sustainable, impactful projects that empower communities.
