Friends With Benefits

Summary

This proposal asks the Friends With Benefits community to ratify the Code of Conduct that has been iterated and refined through dialogue with the community over the past few months.

Abstract

As part of a commitment to continuous improvement and evolution, and recognition of the FWB community’s increasing complexity, discussion regarding establishing a simple and flexible code of conduct for the community arose during Season 3. In particular, isolated incidents of unwelcome communication and misdirected attention-seeking in public channels sparked discussion about how to codify the examples of positive community engagement and set guardrails for minimizing situations where members are put into uncomfortable scenarios.

Over the course of several months, a self-started committee of FWB members drafted the Code of Conduct, soliciting opinions from members experienced in community management both online and offline. An initial draft of the Code of Conduct was then opened for community comments via Google Docs, and a Town Hall meeting was held to discuss some of the commentary.

Comments regarding clarifying language and the moderation process were incorporated. Where possible, concerns voiced by members of the community who prefer looser guidelines were heard and incorporated as best possible.

Motivation

The purpose of the Code of Conduct is to provide a simple and flexible framework for ensuring that every member of FWB has a positive experience interacting with their fellow community members. The Code of Conduct is meant to encompass both digital interactions and those that increasingly take place in the physical world, as FWB continues to expand its footprint.

Care was taken to write rules that are open-ended enough to preserve the character of the community without sanitizing its countercultural streak while maintaining with firmness that certain types of behavior have no place whatsoever in our community.

Outcomes

If ratified, this proposal will lead to the adoption of the Code of Conduct by the FWB community. The full text of the FWB Code of Conduct is available here and is being released under CC0-1.0 license for use by other Web3 communities to help reinforce their community’s values.
