BIP-41 Extend treasury funding for Infrastructure cost

By 0xBE9E...063951

Intro

Since July 2022 the treasury has covered the infrastructure costs for the operation of beets.fi (BIP-23 and BIP-36) The overarching requirements have been:

  • Infrastructure cost claims are capped at $10k per month.
  • Contributors strive towards reducing the average cost. This proposal is to continue the funding of infrastructure costs by the DAO Treasury while lowering the cap to $7500 per month.

Motivation

The current extension ended at the end of March 2023 at month end. With this proposal we seek to extend this arrangement for another 6 months until the end of September 2023 with a significantly lowered monthly cap due to the following reasons:

  • Infrastructure costs have stabilized and have been significantly lowered.
  • Due to the close cooperation with Balancer and shared infrastructure services currently in the pipeline, the monthly costs of infrastructure for the Beethoven DAO is expected to drop up to 50% in the near future.

Below is a visual representation of the monthly infrastructure costs since May 2022.

InfraCost.JPG

Since May we can see that not only have costs reduced, but they have also stabilized in a range of $4500-$5500 k per month. The slight uptick in February is due to the deployment of the anti scam bot on discord. As a result, as part of the extension, the cap of $7.5k a month is suggested. Infrastructure costs today include but are not limited to:

  • AWS which includes: Build pipelines, virtual machines and databases used for the backend, databases and storage for self-hosted RPC and graph-node, load balancers, s3 storage.
  • Cloudflare and Stellate: Cloudflare offers us security services and Stellate is used as a caching layer for the backend graphql endpoint.
  • Domains and website hosting for our frontend.
  • NEW: The Discord Anti Scam bot which has proven to be very effective in dramatically reducing interruptive scammers on the server.

Risks

There is a risk that infrastructure costs can increase for different reasons i.e. user traffic increases. It is for this reason a monthly cap is applied. If there is a month where there is a valid overspend, a separate proposal (with support) will be raised to gain approval for the excess amount.

Impacts and Specification

  • Treasury - Will continue to carry the monthly infrastructure cost Impact on previous BIPs - This proposal serves as an extension of BIP-36 that runs until the end of March 2023.
  • Team - none.
  • Other contractors or consultants - None.
  • Tokenomics - None.
  • Other committees recognised by the DAO - None.

Execution plan

The DAO treasury covers the infrastructure cost of Beethoven X up to a maximum of $7.5k per month, this would be for an extension of six months (starting with April) up to and including September 2023, totaling a potential maximum of $45k.
